Dissertation

Dissertation defense

The requirements for defending the dissertation are:

According to GPET regulations, the defense can only take place if:

  • the student has completed the course load and curricular activities required by GPET;
  • if the student has passed the Qualifying Exam;
  • if the student is regularly enrolled in a curricular component that represents the development or guidance of a master’s thesis in the semester of the defense;
  • if the student has proven proficiency in at least one foreign language other than their native language.

To schedule the defense:

Important notes:

  • Defenses must be held in person at the UFC Virtual Academic Block (block 1430), Pici Campus. They may be replaced by a remote format provided that there is a member of the board residing outside the city of Fortaleza;
  • At least one member of the Dissertation Committee must be a professor from another institution (professor external to UFC);
  • When a co-advisor participates in the supervision of the dissertation, the judging committee must be composed of at least four (4) members, including the co-advisor;
  • The master’s dissertation must be delivered in printed and/or digital form by the master’s student to each member of the committee at least thirty (30) days before the defense;

Issuance of Diploma:

After defending their dissertation, students must send only the final version of their dissertation (PDF DOCUMENT) and the final version of the educational product (PDF DOCUMENT) to the GPET office (ppgte@virtual.ufc.br), copying their advisor, so that they can be submitted to the UFC Central Library (Rules for approval of dissertations by the library available here).
  • If there are changes to the title of the dissertation after the defense, it is necessary to communicate the change to the GPET secretariat, so that the change can be made in SIGAA;
  • The student must also send us, in the body of the email, the links to the Lattes curriculum of the student (author of the dissertation), their advisor, and their co-advisor (if applicable).
The library will send an email to the student informing them whether the dissertation has been approved or not (it is the student’s responsibility to check their email). If the dissertation is not approved, the student must send (again to the GPET office) a new PDF document with the changes suggested by the library to be resubmitted to the UFC library.
    • Only after approval by the library (with the link to access the dissertation in the repository) will it be possible to open the diploma issuance process in SEI.

To begin the diploma issuance process, after receiving the approval email from the library, students must send a new email (subject: Diploma issuance) to the PPGTE office (ppgte@virtual.ufc.br) with the following documents in PDF format:

  • Copy of undergraduate diploma;
  • Library clearance certificate;
  • Minutes of the defense signed by all members of the board;
  • Copy of identity document. Note: if sending a driver’s license, you must also send a birth certificate, as proof of the student’s place of birth (city of birth) is required.
